Charter a Twelve-Meter

Still graceful, the dowager Gleam (left) and middle-aged Northern Light glide off Newport.

Want to sail a 12-Meter? Chartering one (or two or four) can seem confusing because there's no central "Lease a Legend" contact. Here's a quick guide to sorting out the players in Newport.

For over 10 years Bob Tiedemann has based Gleam out of Newport, currently under his company, Sea Scope Systems. She has done daysails, excursions, events, and classic-yacht regattas. First launched in 1936, Gleam is in eyepoppingly great shape. In fact, all of the Twelves in Newport are in great shape. About four years ago Tiedemann bought Northern Light, match racing for charter was born, and life was breathed into the Antique 12-Meter Association.

American Eagle, owned by her skipper, Herb Marshall, has been an ocean racer and a yacht subsequent to competing as a Twelve. She is operated by America's Cup Charters. Marshall has invested much of the past five years in bringing Eagle back to Cup condition. "These boats now are good sailboats. Not only are they pretty even in speed so that the racing is interesting, but they've got lifelines, comfortable cockpits, decent heads-they're great boats to sail."

Partners with Marshall in America's Cup Charters are George and Jennifer Hill, who own Weatherly. "We took Weatherly over from the Boy Scouts in Seattle in 1985, sailed her back through the Panama Canal, and set up shop in Newport," says George.

Another player, Tom Rowe of the Team Twelve program (an arm of Newport Yachting Services), markets the experience of crewing and racing 12-Meters for team building, for personal growth, and for distinctive "entertainment." Companies that have chartered the Twelves for business dynamics and other purposes include the billiondollar multinational Asea, Brown, Boveri; Solomon Brothers; United Airlines; and Gillette. There's no question the experience is worth it. The Corinthians are already talking about a repeat performance with the Twelves in 1992.-R.R.
